Three airports, one watchlist

New York is the cheapest place in America to leave from, but only if you know which of the three airports the fare landed at. We treat them as one market.

1. 1

   Scan

   Every hour we sweep fares from JFK, LGA and EWR to a curated watchlist of 50 leisure destinations across the Caribbean, Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East, plus domestic sun routes.

2. 2

   Baseline

   Each route carries an 18-month median price. A fare has to sit well under that median for its season before it counts as a deal.

3. 3

   Verify

   A person tries to book it. If the fare will not ticket, or only exists on one obscure routing, it does not get posted.

4. 4

   Publish

   Deals go out with the date window, the airline, the fare class, and the catch — bag fees, basic-economy limits, connection quality.

The watchlist

50 destinations, chosen because people actually take vacations there. We deliberately skip Latin America and South America — fare data for those markets is unreliable and routinely misquotes taxes and surcharges.
